Training

Our training and qualifications

All NBWFC members are trained to the minimum state and federal standards to qualify as FFT2s. Additionally, some members are red carded to fight fire out of state and others, with more experience and advanced training, are qualified as ICT5s and higher. Minimum requirements for all firefighters include the PA-130, S-130, basic NIMs classes and more. Annual physical pack tests and the RT-130 refresher course along with a fire shelter review and training deployment are required to stay qualified. In addition to these state and federal mandates, the crew itself engages in routine training sessions, which include reviews and refreshers on:

  • Basic line construction & hand tool use & maintenance

  • Engine operations & pumps

  • Fireline medical emergencies

  • Sawyer and tree felling operations

  • Drip torch & burnout operations

  • Hose lays and water supply

  • Structure protection

  • Sand table exercises

  • Radio/comms reviews
